Vacation 2002 - North Carolina

The update I wrote while on this vacation is in the archives in late October 2002.  It's called "'Tater Chips".  The one following it details the dead body experience, which I had forgotten about.  Strange, considering it is an item on my lifelist.  From October 11 to October 20, 2002, I was on one of my then-annual vacations to North Carolina.  This year was especially boring, and I can't really say that I had a good time.  Nevertheless, I got pictures.  I took a lot of pictures of interesting gravestones and a very neat-looking crypt in Barnesville, GA, where my great-grandmother was born and raised.  But I think just saying that is enough to convince some people that I am a freak, so I have restrained myself from posting them.  Another area of my vacation that you will see pictures of is Mt. Mitchell.  I rode up there on the Blue Ridge Parkway one afternoon and bore the freezing cold temperature to look out from the highest point east of the Mississippi River.

This is Cattail Creek.  The water is normally slightly lower, and the rocks are usually drier, but the weather was rainy.

I am especially fond of this picture.  It gives a nice view of some rolling hills and an apple orchard.  I took this picture while standing in another adjacent apple orchard.  The one you see here is harvested for commercial use.

Part of the magnificent view from the observation tower on Mt. Mitchell.  This particular picture is of the Cain River basin.

This is also from the observation tower.  I'm not sure what it is overlooking, but it is sort of neat to see the full shadows of the clouds.

Acid rain has killed many trees on Mt. Mitchell.

I'm assuming that rock in the center of the picture is the highest natural point on the mountain.  The observation tower, which is strangely absent from my pictures, is far taller.

Me staying warm with my buff and hot chocolate.  Laugh if you must.  At least I got to use it for once.

I'm also a little proud of this picture.  This is a monument in the middle of the Confederate soldier section of a cemetery in Barnesville, Georgia.

A close-up of the monument's inscription.  The tiny gravestones on the left and right are for Confederate soldiers.

My great-grandmother grew up in this house.  The Civil War marched right in front of it.  I believe it was Sherman's march, actually...

Bebe laying under a blanket.  Does it get any better?

Yes, I'm afraid it does:  Bebe wearing a harness, laying in front of a fire.

This is the cabin that I stayed in last year (2001), and many, many previous years.  It is down the road from the one I stayed in this year.

The incredibly small room that I slept in for some seven days...

This is what I have affectionately referred to as Neo Ingles ever since my vacation in October 2001.  It used to be this ratty little run-down place.  When I returned in 2001, it had transformed into Neo Sailor Ingles.

Me and Bebe in the motel in Macon, GA on the way home.  Notice the use of buffs as improvised sleeves.  I'm pretty awesome, right?
